If you can not find any answers to your issue here, try one of the forums from the Forums tab above. This FAQ is meant only for issues of FMCB installation / useage and not for the apps it may launch. For specific help on apps, please use the forums to find an answer.

The installer cannot find  BOOT.ELF, USBD.IRX or USBHDFSD.IRX, whats wrong?
---If installing from disc:
  • Installer cannot read the disc, due to poor media, improper burn settings or lens/laser issues
  • BOOT.ELF  was not added to the INSTALL folder or is in a location other than the INSTALL folder
  • INSTALL folder is in a sub-folder installer cannot read
  • USB drivers were not in the Modules folder inside the INSTALL folder
---Possible Soultions:
  • Use good quality discs
  • Use a good burner app that supports PS2 format
  • Check that the INSTALL folder has a BOOT.ELF, but not inside any of the other folders
  • Check the Modules folder contains the USB drivers
---If installing from USB:
  • USB device is incompatible with installer
  • USB device is not formatted to FAT32
  • USB device has file corruption
  • BOOT.ELF  was not added to the INSTALL folder or is in a location other than the INSTALL folder
  • INSTALL folder is in a sub-folder installer cannot read
  • USB drivers were not in the Modules folder inside the INSTALL folder
---Possible Soultions:
  • Try another USB device
  • Check the USB device is formatted to FAT32
  • Re-format the USB device
  • Check that the INSTALL folder has a BOOT.ELF, but not inside any of the other folders
  • Check the Modules folder contains the USB drivers
Can FMCB be installed on 1 memory card for all my consoles?
Yes as long as all your consoles are in the same region, you can choose the Multi-Install option.

Can i install FMCB on any PS2 model?
All consoles made before mid 2008  work with FMCB. The new Slim SCPH-9xxxxx models with a Date code of 8C and a BIOS v230  dont work with FMCB. All models after this version also will not work with FMCB.

I copied my FMCB files from 1 MC to another and its not working, why not?
Free Mcboot  has to be encrypted by the Installer with the MC's ID and the console's region folder to work. Each MC has its own unique ID , so copying from one MC to another will not work. It MUST be installed by the installer to work on a MC. You can make a backup copy and store it somewhere on another device, but it will only work on the same MC you copied it from.

I installed FMCB successfully, but only the normal menu shows, whats wrong?
MC booting:
  • You did not include any of the recommended apps in your INSTALL folder
  • You did not use all caps for the recommended apps
  • You used a custom FREEMCB.CNF and did not configure it properly
  • Your MC is not compatible (poor clone)
  • You have a modchip and its conflicting with FMCB properly working

Possible Solutions:
  • Use the Noobie Package to install with
  • Try another MC
  • Disable the modchip or use an unmodded ps2

USB booting:
  • You do not have the recommended apps in a BOOT folder on the USB's root
  • You did not use all caps for the recommended apps
  • Your FREEMCB.CNF is incorrectly configured or missing
  • The USB IRX drivers were not installed
  • The USB device is not compatible

Possible Solutions:
  • Check that you have a folder named BOOT directly on the USB and not inside another folder
  • Check that each recommended app is in fact all in caps, even the file extension
  • Check your FREEMCB.CNF file for correct paths
  • Check the MC to see if the USB IRX files are present
  • Make sure the USB device is fomatted FAT32 and you are using the latest USB IRX drivers in the MC
  • Try another USB device
Free McBoot has a recovery option as long as the USB IRX drivers were installed to the MC. You can place any ELF file renamed to RESCUE.ELF on the root of your USB device and Free mcBoot will run it if the USB device is compatible.

Do i need to put a DVDELF.BIN file  in the INJECT folder for FMCB to install properly?
No, it is not a requirement to use the DVDELF.BIN added to the INJECT folder for a successful install. All consoles will produce a DVDELF file for the installation from the console.
Adding a DVDELF.BIN to the INJECT folder was designed to reduce the overall filesize on Fat ps2 consoles, as they produce a DVDELF file twice the size of the slims. The Slim models produce a filesize of 75kb already, so it would be useless to add it to your install.

How can i update an older version of FMCB?
You can install the new FMCB version over your current installation and overwrite it by launching the FMCB installer via uLaunchELF, provided you have it available in your current install. Just place the new FREE_MCBOOT.ELF and the INSTALL folder on a USB device and run the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF from uLaunchELF's FileBrowser. If you dont have anything worth saving on the MC, it might be a good idea to format the MC, but it is not necessary.

Some of the apps launched by FMCB dont work, what can i do?
FMCB is a simple application launching program and is independent of those apps it launches. You must first determine that they are working properly from other launching methods. If not, consult the forums in a thread for the app giving you problem to see if there are problems/solutions already available.
If its only a problem with FMCB:
  • Check that the filenames and file locations match the FREEMCB.CNF configuration paths
  • Check to see if the device the apps are launching from are properly connected
  • Check to see the USB device formatted to FAT32
  • Device that ELF is launched from is not compatible
  • USB IRX drivers not present in MC's SYS-CONF folder  for USB launched apps
  • Paths are assigned to a device in the FREEMCB.CNF  which is not supported by FMCB. Use uLaunchELF instead.
I dont have any cheat disc, swap discs, modchips or any money, how can i install FMCB?
If you have a PS2, then you should also have some PS2 game discs , so you can try the PS2 Game swap Trick from the 'Installation' tab above.
If you cant do that either, then your only other option would be to save up a few dollars and send your MC thru the mail to someone willing to install it free, you must pay the postage though. Official Free McBoot Install volunteers is a safe place to look.
Maybe you have a  friend that has one of those things you could use to install it. Otherwise your SOL if none of these work for you.

How do i install FMCB to another MC with just the FMCB i have now?
  • Place the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF and the INSTALL folder on a USB stick.
  • Re-name the FREE_MCBOOT.ELF to RESCUE.ELF
  • Insert the MC with FMCB  in slot1, the other one in slot2, and the USB device
  • Start the console and the installer should load
If its doesnt work for some reason,  re-name it back to FREE_MCBOOT.ELF (or whatever you will know its the installer) and use uLaunchELF to run it.
